In Alaska, protecting the future of both the Wild Caught Alaskan Black Cod stocks and THE ENVIRONMENT TAKES PRIORITY over opportunities for commercial harvest. The Alaska population of sablefish is estimated from biennial scientific research surveys. Managers use survey data to determine the “TOTAL AVAILABLE” population, identify the “ALLOWABLE CATCH” and set a lower “ACTUAL CATCH” limit to ensure that the wild sablefish population in Alaska’s waters will always be sustainable
The high oil content of Wild Caught Alaskan Black Cod is largely comprised of omega-3 fatty acids. The omega-3’s are primarily DHA and EPA, the most studied, beneficial, and readily usable by the body.

Wild Caught Alaskan Black Cod is a mild, white flaky delicacy that is packed with the same levels of omega-3s as salmon. Its velvety texture, perfect white flakiness, and sweet flavor make it a rich meal experience, as well as a healthy, sustainable fish choice. Ours is native to the deep, frigid waters of the Northern Pacific. If you are trying sablefish for the first time, it is likely to become your new favorite fish!
Black Cod is a popular choice for today’s chefs, but this wasn’t always the case. In the 1800’s, Black Cod was largely thrown back as bycatch for Halibut fishermen. It wasn’t until Sablefish was re-branded as “Black Cod” that their popularity took off. Fishermen, chefs, and eaters alike quickly fell in love with this fish-rich, buttery flavor and velvety texture. Black Cod proved to be versatile, great for grilling, broiling, roasting, steaming, poaching, pan-searing, and especially smoking.
